ACADEMIC WRITING: Zine & Work Analysis

Art Galore Zine & My Work Analysis

Zine created on InDesign

I created this zine as a way to document my images from my "Peckham, My London" project. As a writer, I knew that context and story would really elevate my project, and also narrate the life within the images. I edited my images on Photoshop, wrote the article on Word, created the logos on Illustrator, and created the zine on InDesign. It has been a really technical and tedious project in terms of getting all aspects of the project to work together visually.

The front cover image is of my close friend Khadija, and when shooting, I knew this was the "money shot" as I phrased it. It is one of my favourite photographs that I have taken. I think it is successful due to the perspective, the black and white scheme, the lighting, and my editing. I intended for the photo to be somewhat harsh to emphasise the texture and tones from within Khadija's skin and hair. I took the photo from slightly below eye level, as I wanted to present Khadija as a powerful and dominant figure, as though she is demanding the attention of the viewers.

When creating the zine, I intended on writing honestly about my relationship with my own hair, as I wanted my articles to be about my own understanding of hair, rather than that of others. This made the piece extremely personal and fulfilled the brief of representing London from my perspective. I think that the overall zine was successful, as I was experimental with photo and text placements which I think worked well, and I really like the final outcome. To improve, I think that documenting interviews with the models would have elevated the project, as I could have more of an insight into other individuals' relationships with their hair. Fortunately, for my upcoming final major project, I intend to continue my research and investigation into hair and our relationships with it.
